Chapter Twenty-Three

GRANT

Kit smells like sex. From the glassy-eyed look she had when I found her and the way she practically jumped out of her skin, I know Rafe has touched her. My blood boils thinking of him touching her while I’ve been playing the role of the “good guy” that waits to romance her.

I’m getting real fucking tired of the act. It’s time to step shit up.

I watch her while she focuses on the radio. She’s flipping through the satellite radio with a determined look on her face. She pauses to listen for a few seconds before she shakes her head and flips to the next one. She’s so fucking beautiful, even with the post-orgasm glow from another man dusting her cheeks with a blush.

Fucking Rafe. He’s a dead man.

He better not have fucked her first. That’s for me.

She tucks a lock of hair behind her ear and shifts back into her seat, letting the radio stay on the station she’s picked. It’s a slow song, or at least it starts out that way. It builds and I hear the guitars and drums hit. It’s different from what I thought she might listen to. It has a bite to it I didn’t expect. After being obsessed with her, I thought I knew Kit inside and out, but she surprises me with her choice. Looks like even two weeks of watching her every move doesn’t mean I know her the way I want.

I like that she surprises me.

She looks my way. “Where are we going?” she asks.

I keep my eyes focused on the road, though I keep track of her through the corner of my eye. “You like pizza?” I ask her. The last time we went to dinner we had Italian, but tonight it’ll be more relaxed. If I want to pull Kit in, I’m going to have to do it in a way she recognizes. She doesn't know that things won’t be normal with me, but she can have that for now.

“I love it!”

“Then you’re in luck. I’m going to take you to a hidden gem.”

“Oh yeah?” She’s smiling now. Her face has softened from the tense look she got when her apartment came up. She looks relaxed now. Not like what I know she looked like for Rafe, but it’s a start. She’ll give that to me soon enough.

“Yeah,” I tell her and when she looks like she’s going to press about the pizza joint I’m driving us to, I ask, “How’s everything?” I make sure to keep my voice casual and light. The table reads are over, which means my time with Kit has been cut down. I don’t like it, but it is what it is. I know she’s been on set but I’ve been waiting for the right time before I got her alone. Looked like Rafe’s timing was one step ahead of me.

I have to do better.

I’m used to being at the top of the food chain. It’s one of the reasons Rafe and I keep our distance from each other.
